Anthony Semann

After qualifying as an early childhood teacher, Anthony spent his early career working in long day care. Eager to learn as much as he could about practice and people, he built his pedagogical knowledge and developed his skills in fostering relationships. Early on, Anthony also discovered the importance of equity and social justice as a driving force in social change. His desire for learning remains apparent, so too does his commitment to naming inequity, shifting practice towards justice and living a life that embodies all that he preaches.

The Risk of Not Debating: Supporting You and Your Team to Work Towards Quality Practice 

ABSTRACT:

In many early childhood settings, harmony is often mistaken for effectiveness. Teams can become congenial rather than collegial, avoiding the very conversations that lead to growth, clarity, and quality. But what happens when we don’t debate? What is at risk when differing perspectives are silenced, softened, or left unexplored?

Drawing on a conceptual framework developed to support practice change, this keynote invites leaders and educators to reconsider the role of professional dialogue in shaping high-quality practice. It explores how respectful debate, intellectual challenge, and diverse viewpoints are not disruptions to teamwork, but essential conditions for it.

Participants will be supported to reflect on their own team cultures, examine the difference between conflict and productive tension, and consider practical ways to foster environments where thinking is visible, voices are valued, and practice is continually evolving.

Because the real risk is not disagreement. The real risk is staying comfortable and standing still.
